9 Killed 29 Injured In Accidental Blast At Nowgam Police Station

Srinagar : Nine persons were killed and over two dozen were wounded after a massive explosion, allegedly triggered by explosive material seized in a Delhi blast terror case, went off inside Nowgam Police Station in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday night, officials said.
A civil government official who was inspecting the seized material was among the nine dead. Their identity has not been disclosed so far. Many injured people brought to the tertiary Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar are under treatment.

Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat visited the site and assessed the area on Saturday morning. He is addressing the media at 10 am to share an official statement. IGP Kashmir Vidhi Kumar Birdi also arrived at the spot this morning and took firsthand stock of the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
An official said that the explosives were stored inside the Police Station Nowgam, and they detonated inadvertently, causing massive explosions. The explosions shook the city late at night around 11:20 pm, waking up residents into panic. The impact of the loud bang was felt over 20 kilometres in Srinagar.

The police station is at the centre of the ongoing probe into the terror module linked to the Delhi Red Fort blast case. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had busted an inter-state transnational terror module comprising seven persons, including four doctors from Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Faridabad. Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, Dr Adeel Rather, Dr Shahid Shaheen, and deceased Umar Nabi, who blew himself up in the I-20 car at Red Fort in Delhi.
The ammonium nitrate was part of the high-profile case in which 2,900 kilograms of IED-making material were recovered from the inter-state terror module described by police as a “white-collar” terror ecosystem. An official said the forensic team had arrived at the police station and they were inspecting the material.

Ruling out any terror angle, a police official described it as an accidental detonation. "The blast occurred around 11:20 pm when a Forensic Science Laboratory team, police personnel, and the local Naib Tehsildar were examining the seized material inside the station," a senior police officer said on the condition of anonymity.
The Police Station is located inside a residential colony, and residents said the police station and the vehicles went up in flames as soon as the explosives went off. The rescue works started some time after the fire brigade and ambulances reached the area, with top police officials and security forces arriving there.
