New York, Oct. 25, 2025:
A broad coalition of Hindu and Indian American organizations has sent an open letter to New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, sharply condemning what they describe as his “Hinduphobic actions and statements.” The groups have called on Mamdani to retract his alleged remarks and clarify his stance toward the city’s Hindu community.

The letter — signed by over 20 prominent diaspora organizations accuses Mamdani of promoting misinformation and hostility toward Hindus through his public comments and legislative positions.

The coalition cited several examples they claim reflect “consistent bias”:

  • Speaking at a 2020 rally where Hindus were allegedly slurred with demeaning remarks.
  • Calling Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, New York’s first Hindu elected official, a “puppet of Hindu fascists.”
  • Mischaracterizing India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as “anti-Muslim,” while ignoring its stated intent to help persecuted minorities such as Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians in neighboring countries.
  • Falsely portraying India’s Gujarat state as having experienced a “mass slaughter of Muslims,” which they say fuels anti-Hindu sentiment.
  • Failing to condemn multiple attacks on Queens’ Tulsi Mandir and supporting Assembly Bill 6920, which they argue unfairly targets Hindus by associating “caste” primarily with their community.

“These statements and actions have caused great pain to many New Yorkers of Hindu faith,” the letter states. “We condemn them in the strongest terms and have no confidence in your ability to engage on issues concerning the Hindu community.”

The organizations emphasized that Hindus — whether from India, the Caribbean, or other nations — are an integral part of New York’s diverse fabric, contributing in education, healthcare, business, and public service. “Anyone who aspires to be the mayor of the largest city in America must ensure that they stand against hate and bigotry and make New York City a place that welcomes all,” the letter adds.

The signatories have expressed that they are awaiting Mamdani’s response, hoping he will clarify his position and engage constructively with the Hindu American community. As of publication, Mamdani’s campaign has not publicly responded to the letter.
