Former India cricketer Suresh Raina
praised India captain Rohit Sharma for selecting Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad
for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Jaiswal was selected in the 15-member team
despite not playing a single ODI in his career so far. The 23-year-old has been
impressive in T20Is and Tests ever since making his India debut after a
remarkable performance in the
IPL 2023.
The southpaw scripted history in the
season, registering the most number of runs by an uncapped player in the
history of the T20 extravaganza. Jaiswal accumulated 625 runs in the season
from 14 innings at an average of 48.07 and a strike rate of 163.61. Recently,
Suresh Raina shared his views on his selection and mentioned his hunger to
perform for the team. The former batter also praised Rohit Sharma and the
selectors for showing their faith in Jaiswal and extolled the youngster for his
hard work and dedication.
"I think that boy is very hungry
for runs. I mean, whenever we see his story, I think he has come to that level
very eagerly. Hats off to the selectors, especially Rohit Sharma. Without
playing ODI, you are taking that boy to the Champions Trophy. You know that he
does a lot of hard work, dedication is very good. But he has a different
attitude in his eyes, he has a different patience.
It seems that this boy has
come prepared. This is the beauty of Indian cricket. If you work hard and you
have the passion to represent the country, then there will be some power that
will tell you to go and represent the country. Rohit has done this with
Yashasvi," said Raina on Star Sports.
Jaiswal was in sensational form in 2024 in
Tests as he finished as the second-highest run scorer of the format with 1478
runs to his name from 15 matches (29 innings) at an average of 54.74 with three
hundreds and nine fifties.
Apart from that, he's also scored 723 runs in T20Is
from 22 innings at an average of 36.15 having slammed one hundred and five
fifties. After proving his mettle in both Tests and T20Is, Jaiswal will be
eager to get his ODI career off to a remarkable start as well if given an
opportunity in the upcoming series vs England or the Champions Trophy.
