5th AAVIO Gathering at VMX: Honoring Legacy, Driving Innovation, and Shaping the Future of Veterinary Medicine

American Association of Veterinarians of Indian Origin (AAVIO) hosted its 5th Annual Gathering during VMX 2025, the world’s largest veterinary conference. The event brought together veterinarians and professionals to celebrate AAVIO’s legacy, embrace innovation, and discuss exciting developments shaping the future of veterinary medicine.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Dr. Ramaathan, from AAVIO’s Florida Chapter, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to Merck Animal Health for its continued sponsorship. Merck’s unwavering support has been instrumental in advancing AAVIO’s mission and providing resources for its members.

Dr. Ravi Murarka, AAVIO President, delivered a moving overview of the organization’s history, honoring its founders and their vision. A significant highlight of the evening was Merck Animal Health’s presentation of a prestigious challenge coin to Dr. Murarka. This rare honor, shared by only eight individuals worldwide, recognizes exceptional service, leadership, and dedication to the profession.

The event also featured a forward-looking presentation by Dr. Ravishankar Bhooplapur, President of the Xavier School of Veterinary Medicine in Aruba. He introduced the new veterinary college, showcasing its state-of-the-art campus and vision for advancing veterinary education globally.

The gathering welcomed esteemed guests from India, including:

Dr. Hatekar Pune,

Dr. Umesh Karakarand

Dr. Chousalkar of Mumbai.

These trailblazing veterinarians shared insights into their groundbreaking work in India. Notably, Dr.Hatekar for providing Orthopedic Surgery workshops and Dr. Karakare’s efforts in rabies eradication and collaboration with Mission Rabies highlighted the importance of global partnerships in addressing critical veterinary challenges.

Dr. Murarka shared a deeply personal connection to this mission, reflecting on his own traumatic experience of surviving a dog bite as a child. He vividly described enduring the painful post-bite vaccination process, fueling his lifelong commitment to rabies eradication. He announced his plans to work with Mission Rabies in Mumbai, demonstrating his dedication to making a tangible difference in the fight against this deadly disease.

The formal proceedings concluded with remarks from Dr. Vani of the Florida Chapter, who emphasized the importance of collaboration, unity, and shared purpose within AAVIO. The evening ended on a high note with a vegetarian dinner, fostering camaraderie and a spirit of togetherness among attendees.

The 5th AAVIO Gathering exemplified the organization’s achievements, aspirations, and the enduring power of global collaboration in veterinary medicine.
