US President Donald Trump stated that India would take the “right action” regarding the deportation of illegal immigrants following a phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump’s remarks came after their discussions the previous day, in which immigration was a key topic.
“Had a great discussion on immigration with Modi. India will do what is right when it comes to taking back illegal immigrants,” Trump said, according to Reuters. He also mentioned that Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit the United States in February, though this has not yet been officially confirmed by India's Ministry of External Affairs.
In a statement shared on social media, Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation for the conversation, writing, “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”
The two leaders also discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation on a range of issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. Trump emphasized the need for India to boost its purchases of American-made defense equipment and to pursue a more balanced trade relationship with the United States.
The conversation also included plans for Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to the White House, which underscores the growing "strong friendship and strategic ties" between the US and India. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the US-India strategic partnership, particularly within the Indo-Pacific Quad alliance.
The statement highlighted India’s pivotal role in the region, noting that the country will host the Quad Leaders’ Summit for the first time later this year.
