Star-studded opening at Manhattan’s iconic Quad Cinema celebrates independent cinema, international filmmakers and cultural unity

NEW YORK, August 4, 2026 — The Indie Film Festival Awards (IFFA) 2026, founded by international filmmaker and entrepreneur Mukesh Modi, opened in grand style in the heart of Manhattan, bringing together distinguished dignitaries, filmmakers, celebrities, media professionals and community leaders for a celebration of global independent cinema.

The festivities began on an auspicious note with a traditional prayer led by Pandit Shri Jagdish Tripathi, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere and setting the stage for three days dedicated to cinema, creativity and cultural exchange.

Grand Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by an esteemed group of dignitaries and film industry leaders:

Amb. Binaya Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York;
Hon. Ujwal Nirgudkar, Academy Awards Jury Member and Chairman of the India Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE);
Hon. Abhay Sinha, President of the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA); and
Mukesh Modi, Founder President of the Indie Film Festival Awards (IFFA).

Their presence underscored IFFA’s mission of bringing cultures, filmmakers and audiences together through the universal language of cinema.

A Vision Realized by Founder Mukesh Modi

The opening ceremony was hosted by singer Jonessa Dhanraj, who warmly welcomed the guests before introducing IFFA Founder President Mukesh Modi.

Addressing the gathering and speaking with members of the media, Modi shared the remarkable response received by this year’s festival.

IFFA 2026 received 139 film submissions from more than 25 countries, with over 45 films officially nominated for recognition and screenings.

The nominated films, selected through a combination of public voting and evaluation by a dedicated jury panel, represented a diverse range of categories, including Feature Films, Short Films, Documentaries, Student Films and Animation.

Modi emphasized that the selected films would be screened at the iconic Quad Cinema in Manhattan, giving independent filmmakers from around the world an opportunity to showcase their work in the heart of New York City.

“Independent filmmakers have extraordinary stories to tell, but they do not always receive the platform they deserve,” said Modi. “IFFA was created to give those voices an international stage and bring filmmakers, audiences and cultures together through the power of storytelling.”

Hon. Ujwal Nirgudkar commended Mukesh Modi for bringing an international independent film festival to New York and creating opportunities for filmmakers to connect with audiences and industry professionals on a global platform.

Hon. Abhay Sinha, President of IMPPA, praised the initiative as an important cultural bridge and recognized Modi’s efforts to promote filmmakers and Indian cinema internationally while welcoming creative voices from across the world.

Adding glamour and excitement to the celebration, the opening ceremony welcomed several special guests from the worlds of entertainment, television, fashion and media.

Tania Rubis, TV Host & Producer; Kyra Alison, Actor & Model; Veruzka Scavo, Former Miss Venezuela; and Sabrina Medunjanin, Fashion Model, joined the celebration and extended their support to IFFA and the independent filmmaking community.

Their presence brought additional energy to the red carpet and highlighted the growing support for IFFA among entertainment and media personalities.

Guests enjoyed drinks and refreshments while networking and celebrating the beginning of the three-day film festival in a warm and vibrant atmosphere.

Award-Winning Film “KHOONTA” Opens the Festival

A major highlight of the opening was the screening of the award-winning feature film “KHOONTA,” written and directed by Anushi Sharma and produced by Mukesh Modi.

Set against the breathtaking landscape of a Himalayan village, KHOONTA follows Sati, a woman awaiting the return of her missing husband, as she navigates love, loss, memory and faith. With nature and the river serving as powerful witnesses to her journey, the film delivers an emotional message about humanity’s relationship with the environment and the consequences of disturbing the delicate balance of nature.

KHOONTA has already received international recognition, including Best Foreign Feature Film at the London Independent Film Awards and Best Indian Feature Film at the Indian Movie Awards in Kolkata, following its Cannes market premiere earlier in 2026.

Its screening at IFFA provided a fitting start to a festival dedicated to meaningful independent storytelling.
