Singapore’s Little India to Host Its First-Ever Street Festival

SINGAPORE : Singapore’s historic Little India is set to come alive with its first-ever dedicated street festival, bringing together heritage, culture, traditional trades, music, food and community activities. The inaugural Little India Street Festival will take place on August 29, 2026, from 10 am to 6 pm, around Campbell Lane and the Indian Heritage Centre.

The festival is being co-created by the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) and the Little India Shop Owners and Heritage Association (LISHA). Organisers say the event is designed to celebrate the businesses, communities and traditional trades that have shaped Little India over generations. Entry to the festival and its free programmes will be complimentary, while food and selected workshops will carry charges.

 

Campbell Lane, one of the best-known streets in Little India, will become the centre of the celebrations. The area’s colourful conserved shophouses and long-established businesses provide an ideal setting for a festival focused on the precinct’s living heritage. Little India itself has been a conservation area since 1989, while traditional businesses including goldsmiths, restaurants, saree shops, garland sellers and sweet shops continue to operate alongside newer enterprises.

 

One of the main attractions will be a large-scale heritage-inspired street installation reflecting the colourful shophouses and historic commercial life of Campbell Lane. The installation will highlight traditional businesses and occupations associated with the area, including textile and jewellery shops, flower sellers, spice merchants, barbers and eateries.

 

Visitors will also have opportunities to participate in hands-on activities. Free programmes include shophouse magnet painting, traditional-inspired block printing and jewellery-making activities. Through these activities, visitors can learn about Indian motifs and the visual character of Little India while creating their own souvenirs.

Children will have special opportunities to explore the history of the precinct. An interactive exhibition will introduce younger visitors to historical trades and businesses that once played an important role in the local Indian community.

The festival will feature a full day of community performances from 10 am to 6 pm. The programme includes Indian classical and folk performances, multicultural showcases, contemporary acts, youth performers and live music.

The performances are intended to reflect the diversity of Little India and the wider Singaporean community. A live band will also perform a mix of classic and contemporary Indian songs, adding a modern dimension to the heritage-focused celebration.

 

Food and shopping will form another major part of the festival. A curated Heritage Bazaar will bring together contemporary businesses offering modern interpretations of trades historically associated with Campbell Lane.

Visitors can expect stalls featuring products connected to incense, spices, jewellery, textiles, beauty, food and sweets. Local vendors will also serve street food, snacks, desserts and refreshments throughout the day. Food purchases will be chargeable.

 The bazaar aims to demonstrate how traditional businesses and skills can continue to evolve while remaining connected to Little India’s heritage.

 

The Indian Heritage Centre will also offer ticketed workshops alongside the free festival activities. These include a Tanjore Art Workshop, where participants can explore the distinctive South Indian art tradition and create their own artwork.

A special children’s cultural workshop will introduce young participants to the history and traditional trades of Little India through sensory and interactive experiences involving textiles, spices, sounds and flower-garland traditions.

The festival will also include free guided tours of the Indian Heritage Centre’s permanent galleries at 11 am and 2 pm, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the history of Singapore’s Indian community.

 

The festival represents an effort to present Little India not simply as a historic destination, but as a living cultural neighbourhood where traditional businesses, communities and contemporary enterprises continue to coexist.

Campbell Lane has long been associated with commercial and cultural activity. Its heritage significance is reflected in the conserved shophouses that line the area. According to Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority, several pre-war shophouses around Campbell Lane date back to the early 20th century.

The new festival gives visitors an opportunity to experience that heritage directly through food, music, crafts, shopping, storytelling and community participation.

 

For families, tourists and Singapore residents alike, the event promises a different way to experience Little India—one that combines its historic character with contemporary creativity.
