FIA–Chicago Launches Grand India Independence Day Celebrations with Tricolor Hoisting in Downtown Chicago

Chicago : The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA–Chicago), one of the largest umbrella organizations of the Indian American community since 1980, proudly launched its two-week India Independence Day celebrations by hoisting the Indian Tricolor in the heart of downtown Chicago.
It was a memorable moment to see the Bharatiya Tricolor flying amid Chicago's iconic skyline, alongside the flag of the United States. The sight of the two flags together symbolized the bond between the world's largest democracy and world's oldest democracies—a truly proud and inspiring moment for the community.
The ceremony began with FIA Trustee Rakesh Malhotra welcoming and inviting FIA President Hemant Patel, along with FIA executives Anil Singh, Rohit Joshi, Joy (Dipen) Shah, Bhavesh (Bob) Patel, and Arvind Ankleshwaria to the stage.
Hemant Patel welcomed the audience, dignitaries, and guests. FIA executives then presented floral bouquets to retired Brigadier Navin Ahuja, FIA Secretary and veteran Arvind Ankleshwaria, Honorable Consul General of India Somnath Ghosh, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, Alderwoman Debra Silverstein of Chicago’s 50th Ward, FIA Trustee Rakesh Malhotra, past FIA executive Hashmukh Patel, and journalist Vandana Jhingan.
Many community and organizational leaders attended the occasion, including Harish Topiwala, Prakash Anturkar, Ajit Shah, Smitesh Shah, and Nishant Soni, representing Elder Care MAFS, UMAS, and the International University of Vedic Wellness (IUVW).
The ceremony continued with a stirring rendition of the American National Anthem, followed by enthusiastic chants of "God Bless America!" and "Long Live America!" from the crowd.
The long-awaited moment arrived as the Indian Tricolor was hoisted against the blue sky alongside the American flag. The ceremony continued with Vande Mataram, creating a memorable experience as the crowd sang along with young participants Shanaya Kapoor, Aashvi Kapoor, Kanakh Sharma, and Bhavya Sharma.
The Indian National Anthem was led by 6-year-old Dhara Shukla, followed by resounding chants of "Bharat Mata Ki Jai!"
FIA President Hemant Patel sang Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, the iconic patriotic tribute honoring the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Consul General Shri Somnath Ghosh, in his remarks, highlighted the celebration of freedom, the shared values of the world’s largest and oldest democracies, and the strength of diversity.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas made a profound statement, saying that Illinois would be like a desert without the contributions, talent, and intellect of the Indian community. She recognized the community’s significant leadership and contributions across various fields, including research, education, and numerous industries. She also presented a proclamation letter to FIA President Hemant Patel in recognition of the occasion.
Alderwoman Debra Silverstein of Chicago’s 50th Ward addressed the gathering and extended her greetings on the occasion.
After the flag hoisting, the second highlight of the event was a mesmerizing performance by Twinkling Stars Academy, presented by Vishnu, Shivani, Lakshmi, and Vijay. Their "Five Elements Dance" brought Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Sky to life through stunning choreography, vibrant visuals, and a blend of patriotic elements representing both the United States and India.
The breathtaking performance delivered a powerful message about environmental preservation and community responsibility. A special salute to the parents for nurturing and training the talented teenagers for such a beautiful and meaningful presentation.
In his presidential remarks, Mr. Patel said, “Freedom was never free, and our celebrations must carry both joy and deep gratitude.”
He also emphasized that religiously motivated terrorism remains a grave threat to the world and urged global leaders to address the root causes of religious extremism to build a peaceful and secure future.
The event concluded with the announcement of the remaining three Independence Day celebrations: the Triranga Car Rally on August 15 at 10:00 AM at India Hub, Schaumburg; the Patriotic Gala on August 16 at 6:00 PM at Haridham Mandir, Schaumburg; and the Grand India Independence Day Parade on August 23 at 11:00 AM on Devon Avenue.
