‘Jana Nayagan’ Gets Mixed Early Reviews as Vijay’s Final Film Opens to Massive Fan Frenzy

 

 

Actor Vijay’s much-awaited and reportedly final film, Jana Nayagan, hit theatres on Thursday to grand celebrations across Tamil Nadu, with fans turning the release into a festival. From bursting crackers and dancing outside cinema halls to waving giant banners, enthusiastic supporters welcomed the film despite delays caused by certification issues and an online leak ahead of its release.

 

While the atmosphere outside theatres reflected overwhelming excitement, the film’s initial response on social media platform X was mixed, with audiences divided over its storytelling and technical execution.

Many viewers praised Vijay’s commanding screen presence, describing his introduction and action sequences as the film’s biggest strengths. Fans called his title card and several mass moments “goosebumps-inducing,” while highlighting the high-energy background score composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The interval sequence also received widespread appreciation, with several users calling it the standout moment of the film.

Bobby Deol’s performance as the antagonist earned positive feedback from early viewers, while supporting actors Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde and Gautham Vasudev Menon were also appreciated for their performances. Several fans noted that the film successfully delivers the commercial elements expected from a Vijay entertainer.

 

However, criticism centred on the screenplay, visual effects and pacing. Some viewers felt the narrative lacked originality and described it as predictable, with comparisons being drawn to earlier South Indian commercial films. Others criticised the computer-generated imagery (CGI) and visual effects, saying they appeared unconvincing and reduced the overall cinematic experience. A section of moviegoers also expressed disappointment over the film’s nearly three-hour runtime, stating that the story struggled to maintain momentum after an engaging interval. Emotional sequences, particularly the father-daughter storyline, were described by some reviewers as underdeveloped and lacking impact.

 

Several social media users even claimed the film closely resembled Bhagwant Kesari, with a few alleging it was an unofficial remake. These comparisons, along with criticism of the dialogues and screenplay, contributed to a mixed reception online.

Despite the divided reviews, trade analysts believe Vijay’s immense popularity and the massive opening-day response are likely to ensure a strong box office collection during the opening weekend. Fans have also viewed the film as an emotional farewell to the actor, who is expected to focus on his political career.
