American Hindu Coalition Endorses Rini Sampath for Mayor of Washington, D.C. “It is Time for Change”
In a landmark display of civic unity and cultural pride, the American Hindu Coalition (AHC) hosted a historic Meet & Greet for D.C. Mayoral candidate Rini Sampath on Saturday at the ISKCON of DC temple. This event is part of an ongoing series focused on civic participation and dialogue around issues impacting our communities. The event, which drew hundreds of community members, leaders from multiple organizations, and several regional press outlets, marked a significant inflection point for the Hindu American voice in the nation’s capital.
The gathering coincided with the auspicious celebration of Sita Navami, the birth anniversary of Goddess Sita. For Sampath, the first South Asian woman to ever qualify for the mayoral ballot in Washington, D.C., the timing provided a powerful spiritual backdrop. Participation in the morning’s Bhajans and Aarti allowed the candidate to receive community blessings on a day traditionally associated with resilience, virtue, and the strength of female leadership.
Shekhar Tiwari, Chairman of the AHC, delivered a stirring endorsement, calling on the Hindu American community to step forward at this critical moment. They praised Rini as principled, hardworking, and rooted in service, a leader running not for a title, but to fix what is broken in the nation’s capital. They emphasized that the community stands fully behind her candidacy and that it is time for change.
“Our community is at a defining crossroads,” said Ankur Misra, Executive Director of AHC Maryland. “Seeing so many organizations and temples stand together today proves that the ‘civic silence’ of the past is over. We are no longer just observers; we are an organized, united front ensuring that our values and our families are represented at the highest levels of local government. Rini’s candidacy is a historic first, but our unity is what will make it a lasting movement.”
Dr. Lakshmi Thalanki, a community leader, spoke about key philosophical ideas from Hindu traditions. She highlighted “Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti”, truth is one, though expressed in many ways. She expressed that “Hinduism teaches us not to divide or conflict over differing paths.” She also referred to “VasudhaivaKutumbakam”, the concept of the world as one family, and said such values promote harmony and mutual respect in a global context.
Several prominent community leaders, organizations, and student groups came forward in a unified show of support, including Swamy Maharaj Ramanand Dwivedi, Rajiv Sharma, Mahendra Sapa, Madhav and Madhumita, Shri Tatipamula, Krishna Gudipati, Ashwini and Janak Arora, Dr. Satish and Sheela Misra, and Chitranjan Nath,Sirmukh Singh Manku, Anita Bhandari, Chattar Saini, Premi Chadda, and several others, reflecting the emergence of a broad-based and energized coalition.
The event transitioned from spiritual devotion to rigorous civic engagement as Sampath addressed a packed community hall. Eschewing standard political rhetoric, Sampath focused on her “Fix the Basics” platform, detailing her plans to modernize D.C.’s emergency services, tackle the cost-of-living crisis, support small businesses, ensure fiscal responsibility, and leverage her background in federal cybersecurity to bring operational excellence to the District.Following her remarks, Sampath engaged in an extensive Q&A session, fielding questions from the audience on topics ranging from public safety and small business support to combating Hinduphobia in the current political landscape.
The temple priests and senior devotees bestowed their blessings, which added a deeply meaningful and auspicious dimension to the gathering. Special thanks were extended to Ananda Mataji, Ranga Mataji, and Sonia Mataji for their tireless efforts in managing event logistics and ensuring the smooth execution of the program.
As a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization, the American Hindu Coalition remains dedicated to its mission of nonpartisan civic empowerment. Saturday’s event served as a vital forum for dialogue, ensuring that as the D.C. primary approaches on June 16, the Hindu American community is not only informed but is a visible and influential participant in the democratic process.
