The Mumbai police have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, a Bangladeshi national, who is accused of stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan during a failed robbery attempt at his Bandra residence. Shahzad, who had entered India under the alias Vijay Das to conceal his true identity, was apprehended on Saturday night in Thane after a massive manhunt.
Following his capture, Shahzad, 30, allegedly confessed to the crime, stating, "Ha maine hi kiya" (Yes, I did it), confirming his involvement in the attack. The police investigation revealed that Shahzad had no valid Indian identity documents, confirming his Bangladeshi origins.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday when Shahzad attempted to rob Saif Ali Khan's home but was thwarted. After the assault, he evaded authorities by changing locations multiple times and avoiding surveillance cameras. He eventually sought refuge in the dense mangroves of Thane's Ghodbunder area, where he was finally cornered and arrested.
The police noted that Shahzad appeared frightened and tried to hide in the mangroves upon sensing he was being pursued. He is currently in police custody at Khar Police Station and will be presented in the Bandra Metropolitan Court later today.
